Internal Responsibility System

One of the MOL Provincial initiatives for 2018-2019 is on the internal responsibility system (IRS).  This initiative is running from June 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019.

Initiatives are part of the province’s “Safe At Work Ontario” compliance strategy.  Initiatives are intended to raise awareness of workplace hazards and promote compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.

The internal responsibility system (IRS) is the underlying philosophy of the occupational health and safety legislation in all Canadian jurisdictions.  This system, when successfully implemented puts in place an employee-employer partnership that helps to ensure a healthy, safe, and disease free workplace.  A key principal of the IRS is that both employers and employees are responsible for his or her own safety and for the safety of co-workers.

For the IRS to work successfully everyone must have a clear understanding of what they are responsible for, and what they are accountable for.  Everyone must understand the IRS process, believe in it and take steps to make it effective.  The IRS system affects all levels of the organization from the top, and all the way to the bottom and everyone should be involved.  No one should be fearful of reprisals when using the IRS processes to improve health and safety.   Ensure all your employees know their roles and responsibilities as per your own corporate policy and the legal legislation.
